Akaroa for cruise ship passengers

Your ship anchors in a volcanic harbour, a tender runs you ashore, and a French-named village waits at the end of the jetty. Akaroa is one of New Zealand's prettiest tender ports.

Akaroa has no cruise berth. Ships anchor in the harbour and run tenders to the shore, and this season the tenders land at Drummonds Jetty while the Main Wharf is rebuilt.

Most big ships now berth at Lyttelton, so Akaroa calls are mostly smaller ships. Here is what fits in your day.

The quick answer

Akaroa is a tender port: ships anchor and passengers come ashore at Drummonds Jetty during the 2026/27 wharf rebuild. Wind can delay tenders. Christchurch is 1.5 to 2 hours away each way, so we recommend staying local: a harbour cruise, the harbour and sheep farm tour ($66) and a walk through the village fill a port day well.

Do cruise ships dock in Akaroa?

No. Akaroa is a tender port: ships anchor in the harbour and passengers come ashore by tender boat.

Environment Canterbury cut the anchorages to three in 2024 and lowered the maximum ship length without resource consent from 260 m to 200 m, per ECan. The season runs October to April. Silversea's Silver Moon is listed for 13 December 2026, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, on CruiseMapper. Your own ship's times are the ones to plan around.

Where do the tenders land in 2026/27?

At Drummonds Jetty, about 180 m north-east of the closed Main Wharf, until the wharf rebuild finishes, targeted for mid-2027.

The council rebuilt Drummonds Jetty, 108 m long with a 40 m floating pontoon, to keep the waterfront working during the works. From there it is a short walk along Beach Road to the cruise offices at numbers 61 and 65. Old guides that say "meet at the Main Wharf" are out of date.

Should you go to Christchurch or stay in Akaroa?

Stay in Akaroa. Christchurch costs you 3 to 4 hours on the road, on a hill road that can close in heavy rain.

Guests on the Christchurch shore tours report little time in the city. One guest on a Christchurch shore tour wrote: "too much time on thr coach. therefore we only had 1 hour in Christchurch and this made it a rushed visit." Akaroa's harbour is the reason ships call here. Spend your day on it.

Staying local? The sheep farm tour fits an afternoon and cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before.

What happens on the harbour and sheep farm tour?

A drive around the harbour, 20 minutes at the Hilltop for the view, 15 minutes at Barrys Bay Cheese, then an hour on a family sheep farm.

On the farm a working dog musters the flock, the farmer gives a shearing demonstration, and tea and scones follow on the lawn. The listing gives a 2:00 pm departure from beside the Britomart cannon near the i-SITE, and asks for your ship name and docking time when you book. It has only 11 reviews, mostly from 2020, and the farm gets the praise: "The tour of the Harbour was nothing to get excited about but the stop at the Sheep Farm was outstanding."

Can you fit a dolphin cruise and a tour into one port day?

Yes, on a full-day call: cruise in the morning, then the 2:00 pm farm tour, with lunch in between.

Black Cat's regular cruise leaves at 1:30 pm, which clashes with the farm tour, so pick one or look for an earlier departure on the Black Cat listing. Check the Akaroa Dolphins listing for its morning times. Leave generous slack after the first tender: wind can hold tenders up in both directions.

Is the kayak tour safe for cruise passengers?

Yes for most fit adults: the guides meet ship passengers at the bowling club, a 10-minute walk from the waterfront, but the booking is non-refundable.

The minimum age on the shore version is 10, and you need moderate fitness. One cruise guest wrote: "Allie was very kind and worked with us even when the ship's tenders were late." Because the kayak safari cannot be cancelled or changed, book it only if your call is confirmed.

What can you do on foot from the jetty?

Walk the waterfront to the lighthouse, visit the Akaroa Museum, and see the Giant's House mosaic garden on Rue Balguerie.

The Akaroa Museum looks after the Langlois-Eteveneaux House, one of the few French-era buildings left, and charges no general admission. The Giant's House at 68 Rue Balguerie opens 11 am to 4 pm from October to April. The wooden Akaroa Lighthouse stands at Lighthouse Point on Beach Road, moved there from the heads in 1980. Evening penguin tours do not fit a ship's day call. More in things to do in Akaroa.

Short on time? The Akaroa Dolphins cruise is two hours from Beach Road, a short walk from the jetty.

Frequently asked questions

Do cruise ships dock at Akaroa or tender?

They tender. Ships anchor in the harbour; in 2026/27 the tenders land at Drummonds Jetty while the Main Wharf is rebuilt.

Is it worth going to Christchurch from Akaroa on a cruise stop?

Usually not. It is 1.5 to 2 hours each way, which leaves little time in the city. A harbour cruise and a local tour make a better day.

Can I walk from the tender to the cruise offices?

Yes. Black Cat at 61 Beach Road and Akaroa Dolphins at 65 Beach Road are a short walk along the waterfront.

What if my tender is late?

Independent tours do not always wait. Leave slack after the first tenders, and pick refundable tours where you can.
