Akaroa dolphin cruises compared

Two hours, a volcanic harbour and a good chance of Hector's dolphins riding the bow wave. Two operators run the classic cruise, and they feel quite different on board.

Booking choice: The Akaroa Dolphins cruise, from $81 per person. Check dates Compare the options below

Akaroa has two harbour nature cruises that most visitors choose between: the family-run Akaroa Dolphins boat and the bigger Black Cat catamaran. Both take about two hours. Both go to the harbour heads and back. Both hold Department of Conservation permits to watch the dolphins.

The differences are in the size of the boat, what you get to drink and how each operator handles a day without dolphins. We prefer Akaroa Dolphins for most people, and the table below shows why.

The quick answer

Book Akaroa Dolphins ($81, rated 5.0 from 2,293 reviews) for a smaller boat, a drink and home baking. Book Black Cat ($75) for a big catamaran that sails every day bar Christmas and the option to swim in season. Both cruises take two hours, check in on Beach Road, and neither can promise dolphins.

Akaroa Dolphins or Black Cat: which cruise is better?

Akaroa Dolphins is the better cruise for most people: a smaller boat, a drink and home baking, and a 5.0 rating from more than 2,000 reviews. Black Cat wins on frequency and capacity.

The routes are much the same, and so is the wildlife. What changes is the feel on board. One Black Cat guest put it plainly: "find a good spot when get on boat and try not to move". On Akaroa Dolphins, guests describe a crew that feels "less touristy and more like out with friends".

How much does an Akaroa dolphin cruise cost?

On Viator, Black Cat starts from $75 and Akaroa Dolphins from $81 per adult, and both cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before.

The few dollars between them buy you a drink and home baking on Akaroa Dolphins; Black Cat serves a hot drink. Black Cat takes children under 5 at no charge, according to its booking FAQ. The slower alternative is the Fox II sailing trip from $84, which takes 2 hours 45 minutes.

What route does the Akaroa harbour cruise take?

From the village the boat runs down the harbour to the heads and back, past Ōnuku, Elephant Head and the sea caves to the edge of the Akaroa Marine Reserve.

Akaroa Dolphins lists its stops on its itinerary page: Takapūneke, Ōnuku Marae, Elephant Head, Cathedral Cave ("viewable only from the water"), the marine reserve and Seal Bay. Near the heads the cliffs rise straight from the sea, and the swell picks up. Inside the harbour the water is usually calm.

Are you guaranteed to see dolphins in Akaroa?

No. Sightings are common all year, but neither operator promises them, and neither gives money back if the dolphins stay away.

  • Akaroa Dolphins: if no dolphin is seen, you go again at no charge. The operator claims a "high success rate with dolphin sightings all year round".
  • Black Cat: the Dolphin Promise gives you an open-dated re-cruise voucher, which Black Cat calls "a complimentary voucher and not a monetary refund".

Both promises only help if you can come back. Book an early day of your stay and you keep a second chance.

Staying a few days? Book early in your trip and keep the second chance if the dolphins stay away.

What wildlife will you see besides dolphins?

New Zealand fur seals on the rocks, white-flippered penguins, shags and terns are the usual sightings; orca, humpback whales and albatross turn up now and then.

Fur seals turn up in almost every review. Penguins are small and quick, and not every trip sees them. Akaroa Dolphins also lists mollymawks, giant petrels, gannets and the odd yellow-eyed penguin as occasional sightings. One guest in October 2026 wrote: "We were lucky to see seals, Hector dolphins, and Penguins!"

Where do Akaroa cruises leave from in 2026?

From the operators' offices on Beach Road: Black Cat at 61 Beach Road, Akaroa Dolphins at 65 Beach Road. The Main Wharf is closed for its rebuild.

Black Cat says "Please do not go directly to the Main Wharf, as it is currently closed for redevelopment" on its FAQ, and the rebuild is targeted to finish in mid-2027. Check in 30 minutes before departure. Fox II sails from Daly's Wharf. Black Cat lists parking at Gaiety Hall on Rue Jolie for up to 8 hours at no charge, campervans included, three minutes' walk from the office.

Will you get seasick on the cruise?

Rarely inside the harbour, which is sheltered; the water gets livelier out at the heads.

Black Cat suggests taking an anti-nausea remedy early and lends sea bands from reception. Bring layers and a windproof jacket even in summer. A Fox II guest wrote: "Even when a warm day it can be cold out in the bay, so do take a windproof".

Is a sailing boat or kayak a better way to see the dolphins?

Pick the yacht for a slower, quieter trip and the kayak for an early-morning paddle; pick a motor cruise if you want the best shot at the heads in two hours.

The Fox II sailing trip is rated 4.9 and runs 2 hours 45 minutes, mostly under engine with some sail, guests report. The sunrise kayak safari ($89) is non-refundable once booked. More choices in things to do in Akaroa.
