Akaroa is the classic day trip from Christchurch. You have three ways to do it: drive yourself, take the Akaroa French Connection bus, or book a coach tour with hotel pickup.

Each gives you a different amount of time in the village. That matters if you want to fit in a harbour cruise.

The quick answer

Akaroa is about 85 km from Christchurch, or around 90 minutes by car on State Highway 75. The French Connection bus leaves Christchurch at 9:00 am, reaches Akaroa at 11:00 am and heads back at 4:00 pm, giving you five hours. Coach tours such as the Leisure Tours day trip ($167) pick you up at 8:30 am and run about 9.5 hours.

How far is Akaroa from Christchurch?

About 85 km, or around 1.5 hours by car, on State Highway 75 over the hills of Banks Peninsula.

Distances quoted online run from about 80 to 87 km depending on where you start. The road climbs to nearly 600 metres above sea level, per DOC, and the last stretch is tight and winding. Budget three hours of driving for the round trip.

Should you drive, take the bus or book a tour?

Drive for freedom, take the bus for the cheapest day without a car, and book a coach tour if you want pickup and the stops handled.

What is there to see on the drive?

Lake Ellesmere and Lake Forsyth, the village of Little River, the Hilltop lookout and Barrys Bay Cheese, in that order.

SH75 runs through Halswell, Tai Tapu and Motukarara before reaching Little River, about 45 minutes out, where the rail trail ends and the old grain silos now take overnight guests. Then the road climbs to the Hilltop, where the harbour appears below you all at once. Pull over. On the way down, Barrys Bay Cheese has made cheese since 1895, and on make days you can watch through a window into the factory.

During the wharf rebuild, the Akaroa stop is The Old Post Office at 80 Rue Lavaud, according to the bus company. ChristchurchNZ describes it as a daily scenic service with commentary and photo stops. How much time do you need in Akaroa?

Five hours is enough for a two-hour cruise, lunch on the waterfront and a walk through the village.

On the bus you arrive at 11:00 am. That leaves time for Black Cat's 1:30 pm nature cruise with a 30-minute check-in, and you are back by 3:30 pm. Black Cat says its 12:30 pm dolphin swim also fits the bus. The Akaroa Dolphins cruise is the one we would book; check its departure times on the Akaroa Dolphins listing before you pick a date.

Is Akaroa worth a day trip from Christchurch?

Yes, if you go for the harbour. A cruise, lunch and the Hilltop view make a full, easy day.

The weak point is the road. SH75 is the only route in. It closed between Tai Tapu and Akaroa after flooding and slips on 16 February 2026, when heavy rain hit Banks Peninsula, and it closed in May 2025 too. Check road status before you leave after a wet night.

Weather looking settled? The day tour refunds in full up to 6 days before, so book with a forecast in mind.

Should you stay overnight instead?

Stay if you want the penguins or the stars: the Pōhatu penguin tour and the stargazing tours both start around dark.

Pōhatu Penguins picks up in Akaroa in the evening, and its tour page warns that restaurants may be closed when you return. The Akaroa stargazing tour meets five minutes from town. Drivers can park at Gaiety Hall on Rue Jolie for up to 8 hours at no charge. Ideas for a second day are in things to do in Akaroa.
