Akaroa cruise ship days 2026-27

Akaroa once had 90 ships a season. This summer it has a handful, all small, all at anchor. Here are the dates and what to do with a day ashore.

Akaroa is a tender port: ships anchor in the harbour and run their own boats to the shore. After the 2011 earthquakes damaged Lyttelton, Akaroa took Christchurch's cruise traffic, and by 2019-20 the town (population 636 at the 2023 census) was taking 90 ships a season. Lyttelton's new cruise berth took most of them back.

The 2026-27 season is the quietest in years. This post lists the ship calls on the public schedules, explains how to check them, and sorts the shore tours that work in an Akaroa port day from the ones that do not.

The quick answer

Public schedules show three or four calls at Akaroa in 2026-27: Silver Moon on 13 December 2026 and 26 January 2027, Seabourn Quest on 1 March 2027, and Hanseatic Spirit on 10 March 2027 (CruiseMapper only). Tenders land at Drummonds Jetty during the wharf rebuild. Big ships use Lyttelton, about 90 minutes away. For a short port day, book a harbour cruise or the sheep farm excursion, not a Christchurch city tour.

Which cruise ships call at Akaroa in the 2026-27 season?

Three ships on all the trackers, a fourth on one: Silver Moon twice, Seabourn Quest once, and Hanseatic Spirit on CruiseMapper only.

We checked CruiseMapper month by month and the Cruise Timetables Akaroa schedule on 29 October 2026. Both list 13 December, 26 January and 1 March. CruiseMapper adds Hapag-Lloyd's Hanseatic Spirit on 10 March. Neither shows any calls in October, November, February or April.

These are small ships from the luxury and expedition lines. Itineraries change, and late additions do happen, so check again a month before your trip.

Why do so few cruise ships stop at Akaroa now?

Lyttelton's cruise berth reopened, and cruise lines have cut New Zealand calls sharply because of cost and biosecurity rules.

The numbers on Wikipedia's Akaroa page tell the story: seven ships in 2009-10, ninety in 2019 and 2020 while Lyttelton was out of action, then 19 in 2022 once the new berth opened. Since then the whole country has lost ships. The New Zealand Cruise Association expected port calls to fall from 1,123 in 2023-24 to 663 in 2025-26, B2B News reported.

The reasons the industry gives, as summed up by Cruise Passenger: strict biofouling rules on ship hulls, regulatory uncertainty, and costs that make New Zealand one of the most expensive places for a ship to visit. Small luxury lines still come to Akaroa because a tender port in a volcanic crater is exactly what their guests pay for.

Lyttelton or Akaroa: which port is your ship using?

Big ships berth at Lyttelton, next to Christchurch. Only small ships anchor at Akaroa, about 90 minutes from the city. Check your itinerary: many list both as Christchurch.

Lyttelton Port Company expects 63 cruise visits in 2026-27, starting 22 October, after 60 ships called in 2025-26. If your ticket says Christchurch and your ship carries thousands of passengers, you are almost certainly at Lyttelton.

That changes which tours make sense. Akaroa Dolphins tells guests that Akaroa is about a 90-minute drive from both Christchurch and Lyttelton, so a cruise from Lyttelton means a 3-hour round trip on top of the boat. Read the pickup point before you pay: the sheep farm excursion and the Christchurch city tour both pick up at the port in Akaroa.

How do cruise ship days affect Akaroa's cruises, cafes and roads?

With one small ship at a time, the effect is real but short: a busy morning on Beach Road, fuller midday cruises, and coaches on the Hilltop road.

Tenders start running soon after the ship anchors and land at Drummonds Jetty, the same jetty Akaroa Dolphins boards from. Expect a queue on the jetty and a rush on the waterfront cafes for the first hour or two. The harbour cruises that suit ship passengers, the 12:45 pm with Akaroa Dolphins and the 1:30 pm with Black Cat, fill first.

Shore-excursion coaches also leave for Christchurch over SH75 and the Hilltop, a winding road. If you are driving out from the city on a ship day, give yourself a few extra minutes. Not on a ship? The days to avoid are only these four, and you can book around them easily.

What should cruise passengers book on an Akaroa port day?

A 2-hour harbour cruise or the 2.5-hour sheep farm tour. Skip the 6-hour Christchurch tour unless the city is your goal.

The Akaroa Harbour and Sheep Farm tour from Leisure Tours is built for ship days: port pickup, about 2.5 hours, a sheepdog working the flock, a shearing demonstration and afternoon tea, for up to 22 guests, from $67 USD. You give your ship name and times when you book. A 2020 guest wrote: "It was fascinating to watch Hugh's dog do his job."

For dolphins, walk from the tender to Akaroa Dolphins ($81 USD, 2 hours, drinks and a homemade cookie included) or Black Cat ($76 USD). The 12:45 pm or 1:30 pm sailings leave plenty of time before all-aboard. On Hanseatic Spirit's day the ship sails at 4 pm: take a morning sailing or the 12:45 pm, not the 1:30 pm.

The Banks Peninsula and Christchurch City tour spends about 6 hours, much of it in the coach: guests mention 90 minutes or more each way. It also needs 6 days' notice for a full refund. Our shore excursions guide compares every option.

How do you check whether a cruise ship is in Akaroa on your dates?

Look up Akaroa on CruiseMapper or Cruise Timetables, a month before you travel and again a week before. For Lyttelton, Christchurch Attractions lists ship days.

CruiseMapper shows Akaroa calls by month with arrival and departure times. Cruise Timetables keeps a simpler list by date. For Lyttelton days, Christchurch Attractions publishes the dates large ships are in port and suggests visiting the tram or gondola after 2 pm on those days.

If you are not on a ship and your dates match one of the four Akaroa calls, book your cruise for the morning or late afternoon, or simply pick another day.
