Akaroa Guided Kayaks · Akaroa waterfront

Sunrise sea kayaking in Akaroa

At 7:30 am a small group of kayaks pushes off from the Akaroa waterfront and paddles out toward the marine reserve near the harbour mouth, before the cruise boats start their engines. Pick it for that calm: flat morning water, sea caves, seals on the rocks, and a fair chance of dolphins coming to look at you.

Sunrise Sea Kayaking in the Marine Reserve

About this experience

Akaroa Guided Kayaks runs two trips a day, and this is the early one: the Sunrise Wildlife Safari, 7:30 to 10:30 am. You meet at the picnic tables opposite the Akaroa Bowling Club, by the recreation ground and the boat ramp, about 10 minutes' walk from the main waterfront. After a safety briefing and a practice in the shallows, the guide leads the group along the coast toward the 512-hectare Akaroa Marine Reserve. Guests report double kayaks, paddled in pairs.

The early start is the reason to book. Morning wind is usually lighter, there are no tour boats yet, and the harbour is quiet. On a calm day the guide takes the group further out. Wildlife is a bonus, not a promise: fur seals, white-flippered penguins, shags and native birds are likely; Hector's dolphins sometimes swim right up to the kayaks, and sometimes they don't. The guide takes photos from the water, and there's a light snack.

The catch is the cancellation rule. On Viator this trip is non-refundable and can't be changed for any reason; the only way out is if the operator cancels for weather, when you get a new date or a full refund. The operator's own listing says the sunrise trip suits people who have kayaked before, and you need to swim 30 metres unassisted and get in and out of the kayak alone. No back problems, no pregnancy, a moderate level of fitness. Direct, it lists at NZ$149; Viator shows it from $90 in US dollars.

What guests say

★★★★★

The day was cloudy with a little mist here or there, but there conditions were perfect as there was no wind and we were able to go out even further on the water. [...] The fact you go on the water early before there are any boats makes the whole experience so peaceful. We saw plenty of birds and even some dolphins!

We got close to Hectors dolphins right in the beginning and discovered sea stars in a cave later on. The guide was very knowledgeable and even had tips for other experiences in nature - very warmly recommended!

Tips before you book

  • Only book once your Akaroa dates are fixed. On Viator you can't cancel or change it, and one guest who booked the wrong day had to rearrange the trip.
  • Stay in Akaroa the night before. A 7:30 am start doesn't work with the 90-minute drive from Christchurch.
  • Wear quick-dry layers and bring a dry change of clothes. You will get splashed.
  • Put your phone in a dry bag or leave it ashore: the guide takes photos from the water for you.
  • Want a later start? The same operator runs a shorter Crater Cruiser trip from 11:30 am, sold on its own listing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel the Akaroa sunrise kayak tour?

Not on Viator. The listing is non-refundable and can't be changed. If the operator cancels for bad weather, you're offered another date or a full refund.

Will we see dolphins from the kayak?

Maybe. Hector's dolphins live in the harbour year round and sometimes come close to the kayaks, but nothing is guaranteed. Seals and seabirds are far more certain. For the best odds, a nature cruise covers more water.

Do I need kayaking experience?

The operator says the sunrise trip suits people who have kayaked before, because it covers more distance than its other trip. You must swim 30 metres unassisted and get in and out of the kayak without help.

What is the minimum age for the Akaroa kayak tour?

10 years, and children must be with an adult. Our Akaroa with kids guide lists trips for younger children.
