Akaroa dolphin cruise prices

Two hours on Akaroa Harbour with the world's smallest dolphins costs about as much as a good dinner in town. The headline prices sit close together. The small print does not.

A dolphin-watching cruise on Akaroa Harbour costs from $76 to $84 per adult on Viator in 2026, or NZ$130 to NZ$140 when you book with the operator in New Zealand dollars. A dolphin swim costs NZ$250 direct. A full day from Christchurch with the swim is $224 on Viator, coach included.

The gaps are in the details: who pours you a glass of wine, how much a five-year-old pays, how long you are on the water, and what you get back if the dolphins stay away. Prices below are the Viator from-prices checked on 29 October 2026 and the NZD prices on each operator's own site the same day.

The quick answer

The cheapest harbour cruise is Black Cat at $76 on Viator (NZ$130 direct); Akaroa Dolphins is $81 (NZ$140) with a drink and home baking included; the Fox II sailing trip is $84 (NZ$140) for nearly three hours. The dolphin swim is NZ$250 direct from Akaroa. Viator and direct prices land within a few dollars of each other once you convert. Nobody refunds you for a no-dolphin day: you get a free second trip instead.

How much does a dolphin cruise in Akaroa cost in 2026?

From $76 per adult on Viator for a two-hour cruise, up to $90 for a sunrise kayak trip. Direct prices run NZ$130 to NZ$140 for an adult cruise and NZ$250 for the dolphin swim.

Every way to get onto the harbour with Hector's dolphins, cheapest first. The Viator price is the USD from-price; the direct price is the adult fare on the operator's site.

The nature and history tour is priced differently: $349 for a private group of up to four, so about $87 each when four of you go. It is a land tour of Takapūneke and Ōnuku, not a boat trip.

The lowest fare on the water: two hours with Black Cat, hot drinks included, and a free second trip if you see no dolphins.

Is it cheaper to book direct in NZD or on Viator in USD?

Barely. At 2026 exchange rates of about US$0.57 to US$0.60 per New Zealand dollar, the direct NZD price and the Viator USD price land within a few dollars of each other.

Converted side by side:

TripDirect adult fareIn USD (2026 range)Viator

What Viator adds: a price in your own currency, one account for every booking, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before on the cruises. Read the terms on the swim day trip, which refunds in full only six or more days ahead. What booking direct adds: family passes and the published child and infant fares, which can matter more than the adult price. If your card charges a foreign-currency fee, an NZD payment costs you that too.

What does each cruise price include?

Every cruise includes the skipper's commentary and a hot or cold drink. The difference is what's in the cup: Akaroa Dolphins pours local wine or beer, Black Cat serves tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

  • Black Cat (NZ$130): a two-hour cruise with full commentary, tea, coffee or hot chocolate, water and a souvenir postcard. The bar on board sells anything stronger. A free re-cruise voucher if no dolphins turn up.
  • Akaroa Dolphins (NZ$140): two hours, one complimentary drink from the bar (local wine, beer or a soft drink) and home baking, plus spare jackets and sunscreen on board. The dog on the bow helps spot the dolphins and costs nothing extra.
  • Fox II (NZ$140): close to three hours on a 1922 kauri ketch, with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits. Beer, wine and snacks are for sale.
  • Black Cat swim (NZ$250): a 5 mm wetsuit and mask, hot chocolate and biscuits after the swim, and downloadable photos. No hot shower while the wharf is rebuilt.
  • Never included: transport to Akaroa (about 90 minutes from Christchurch), lunch, and tips. Tipping isn't expected in New Zealand.

How much do children pay on an Akaroa dolphin cruise?

Children 5 to 15 pay NZ$60 on Black Cat and NZ$70 on Akaroa Dolphins when you book direct. Under-5s ride free on Black Cat; Akaroa Dolphins charges NZ$30 for infants.

Child fares are where direct booking can pay off for families. The bands differ by operator:

What do you actually get for the money?

About $30 to $41 per hour on the water. The kayak and the Fox II give the most time per dollar; the two cruises give the easiest two hours.

We divided each Viator from-price by the trip length on the listing:

TripFromLengthPer hour
Sunrise sea kayak$903 hours$30
Fox II sailing$842 h 45 minAbout $31
Black Cat cruise$762 hours$38
Akaroa Dolphins$812 hoursAbout $41, drink included

Per hour isn't everything. The kayak starts at 7:30 am, needs a moderate level of fitness and is non-refundable once booked. Fox II only sails from December to May. The two cruises run all year, and the money buys a warm cabin, a toilet and a guide who knows where the pods were feeding yesterday. Head-to-head details are in Black Cat vs Akaroa Dolphins.

Fox II: nearly three hours under sail for $84, December to May only.

What happens if you don't see any dolphins?

You go again for free. Black Cat gives a re-cruise voucher, Akaroa Dolphins a return ticket valid six months. Neither refunds the money, and no operator can promise wild dolphins.

Hector's dolphins are wild and endangered: about 15,000 live around the South Island, according to the Department of Conservation. Black Cat calls its policy the Dolphin Promise: a free re-cruise voucher if you see none, not a refund. Akaroa Dolphins says that if you don't see any dolphins, you get a return cruise ticket valid for six months at no extra cost. Fox II advertises its own dolphin guarantee; ask for the exact terms when you book.

On the swim, Black Cat is blunt: swims are not guaranteed and there is no refund for an unsuccessful swim. If no dolphins are sighted at all, you get a voucher for the nature cruise. Some reseller pages still quote an older 25% or 50% refund. That policy is gone. A voucher only helps if you can come back, so book an early day of your trip.

See no dolphins and Akaroa Dolphins takes you out again within six months, free.

What is the cheapest way to see Hector's dolphins in Akaroa?

The Black Cat nature cruise: $76 on Viator, NZ$130 direct, and NZ$60 for children. Under-5s go free.

Book the 10:45 am or 1:30 pm sailing, which run all year; from December to March there's a third at 3:45 pm. Black Cat checks in at 61 Beach Road, 20 minutes before departure. Parking is free at Gaiety Hall, a three-minute walk away, for up to eight hours.

The cheapest full day from Christchurch is your own car plus a cruise. The Akaroa Shuttle lists NZ$56 return for adults from late October to March, but its site still carries an old suspension notice, so ring before you count on it. More in the day trip guide.

Are there extra costs to plan for?

Transport, lunch and parking time limits. GST is already in every price, and tips are optional.

  • Getting there: about 84 km and 90 minutes each way from Christchurch. Fuel for a hire car, or a shuttle at NZ$56 to NZ$80 return.
  • Lunch: no cruise includes a meal. The swim day trip leaves lunch out too.
  • Swim extras: no hot shower while the wharf is rebuilt; bring a towel and warm clothes.
  • Late changes: Viator refunds the cruises in full up to 24 hours before. The swim day trip and the Christchurch shore excursion need six days' notice, and the kayak is non-refundable.
  • Cruise-ship days: prices don't rise, but the boats fill. Check the ship days post before you pick a date.
