Akaroa Dolphins · 65 Beach Road, Akaroa

The Akaroa Dolphins harbour cruise

A family from Akaroa runs this two-hour catamaran trip to the harbour heads and back, with a dog on the bow that helps find the dolphins. Pick it for the feel of the boat: 35 guests at most, a glass of local wine, and a crew that has lived on this harbour for eight generations.

Akaroa Dolphins Harbour Nature Cruise

About this experience

Akaroa Dolphins is a family business whose crew says it has eight generations born and raised around the harbour. You collect your ticket at the shop at 65 Beach Road at least 30 minutes before departure, then walk a minute to Drummonds Jetty, where boarding starts 15 minutes before the boat leaves. The catamaran heads out past Ōnuku and the lighthouse to the sea cliffs at the harbour entrance, looking for Hector's dolphins, fur seals, little penguins and seabirds, then turns back. Two hours, door to door.

What sets it apart is small stuff that adds up. The listing caps the boat at 35 guests, so there's room at the rail. Everyone gets a drink (local wine, beer, a soft drink or juice) and a homemade cookie. And there's the dog: Albie, the dolphin dog most guests mention, stands on the bow and reacts when dolphins are near. With 2,290 reviews averaging 5.0 on Viator and Tripadvisor, it's the most-reviewed trip in town.

The honest part. Hector's dolphins are wild and endangered, and nobody can promise them. If you see none, Akaroa Dolphins gives you a return cruise ticket, valid for 6 months at no extra cost. That's a second trip, not a refund, which helps only if you can come back. This boat never puts you in the water: the crew says it does not swim with dolphins for conservation reasons. For that, look at the swim day trip. Booking direct costs NZ$140 per adult; Viator lists it from $81 in US dollars, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What guests say

★★★★★

Small group on a nice boat with a great crew (and Albie, of course). Drinks and good information as we rode through the harbor. I thought we'd be looking for dolphins, but no, the dolphins excitedly found us!

The scenery was stunning, and it wasn't long before the skilled staff found the Hectors dolphins. [...] Despite the windy weather, the boat was very stable and comfortable. The trip finished with a delicious homemade chocolate chip cookie.

Was so glad to hear this is a family run business and they are locals to Akaroa [...] We seen penguins, seals and dolphins so it was the best outcome for the trip and I learned so much from the captain letting us in on all the knowledge of the area and wildlife.

Make sure you leave sufficient time to travel from Christchurch to Akaroa as the 70klms take roughly 90 mins.

Tips before you book

  • Pack a warm layer even in January. The crew's own FAQ says a cool sea breeze can turn up on any summer day.
  • Prone to seasickness? Buy tablets at the Akaroa pharmacy first and ask the crew where to sit: the middle of a catamaran moves least.
  • Take the 12:45 pm sailing if you're driving from Christchurch the same morning. It runs every day of the year.
  • On cruise-ship days the town fills up and so do the boats. Book a day or two ahead, not on the jetty.
  • Keep your booking email. If no dolphins show, the crew gives you a return ticket, and you'll want it handy.

Frequently asked questions

Do you always see dolphins on the Akaroa Dolphins cruise?

No. The dolphins are wild and nobody can guarantee them, though the crew reports one of the highest sighting rates in the harbour. If you see none, you get a free return cruise, valid for 6 months. It is not a cash refund.

Can you swim with dolphins on this trip?

No. Akaroa Dolphins does not swim with dolphins, for conservation reasons. In Akaroa the swim runs only from October to April with Black Cat; our dolphin swim guide explains how it works.

Where do you board the Akaroa Dolphins boat?

Collect your tickets at 65 Beach Road at least 30 minutes before departure, then board at Drummonds Jetty, a one-minute walk away, 15 minutes before sailing. The Main Wharf is being rebuilt, so ignore older directions that send you there.

Is it cheaper to book Akaroa Dolphins direct?
