Akaroa's Main Wharf dates from 1888 and has been the starting point for harbour cruises for decades. Christchurch City Council decided years ago that it was near the end of its life, and the replacement is now under way. For visitors, the short version is simple: your boat still leaves from Akaroa's waterfront, just not from the old wharf.
Here is the timeline from the council's own announcements, where each operator checks in and boards now, and what the works mean for parking and for cruise-ship passengers.
The quick answer
The Main Wharf is closed for a full rebuild that the council expects to finish in mid 2027. Black Cat checks in at 61 Beach Road. Akaroa Dolphins checks in at 65 Beach Road and boards at Drummonds Jetty. Fox II sails from Daly's Wharf. Cruise-ship tenders land at Drummonds Jetty. Allow 10 extra minutes to find your boat.
Why is Akaroa's Main Wharf being replaced?
The 1888 timber wharf was assessed as near the end of its useful life, and repairs no longer made sense. The new one sits on the same spot, 500 to 600 mm higher.
The council's Akaroa Wharf project page traces the decision back to a 2018 assessment. The new wharf is being raised 500 to 600 mm to cope with sea level rise, and it will be set back about two metres from the privately owned buildings at its landward end, according to the council. The budget is now $27 million, up from an earlier $19.1 million.
The design was developed with Ōnuku Rūnanga. The council's April 2026 design update describes a carved taurapa (a waka stern post) about 6 metres high, a whāriki-pattern timber entrance, diagonal timber bracing that echoes the 1888 wharf, and a handrail salvaged from the old structure.
When will the new Akaroa wharf be finished?
The council's target is mid 2027. Resource consent was granted on 20 May 2026, and construction was due to start in June 2026.
The joint decision of the hearing commissioners was released on 20 May 2026 and granted the consents with conditions. The council had said construction would begin in June, after that decision and final approvals, and continue through to mid 2027. Akaroa's visitor site now confirms that work has begun on the blue wharf.
Most of the heavy work happens from a barge running between the wharf and the Akaroa boat ramp. The southern end of the Recreation Ground, at the entrance to town, is fenced off as the contractor's yard. Treat mid 2027 as a target, not a promise: marine construction slips with weather.

Where do Akaroa harbour cruises leave from during the rebuild?
Mostly from Drummonds Jetty, a short walk north of the old wharf. Each operator checks you in at its own office on Beach Road first.
Akaroa's visitor notice says "most harbour cruises and boat departures are now operating from Drummond's Wharf" and that operators have put up signs. In practice the check-in desk matters more than the jetty, because that is where you pick up your boarding pass.
Black Cat's nature cruise and swim check in at 61 Beach Road; staff give you directions to the jetty in use. Akaroa Dolphins collects tickets at 65 Beach Road 30 minutes before departure and boards at Drummonds Jetty 15 minutes before. The Fox II sailing trip uses Daly's Wharf, at the north end of the bay. The sunrise kayak trip meets at the Akaroa Bowling Club on Rue Jolie, away from the works.
A warning from the reviews. One Viator guest in December 2025 wrote that "the meeting point is wrong" and missed the cruise. Read the meeting point in your confirmation, then walk past the office the evening before.

Two older jetties the council rebuilt in 2024 so the harbour could keep working. Drummonds now has a floating pontoon; Daly's took over the fuel pump and the crane.
The council's August 2024 plan named both as the stand-ins for the Main Wharf. Drummonds Jetty was rebuilt to stretch 108 metres into the harbour and reopened at 9 am on 18 December 2024; Daly's Wharf, strengthened and re-decked, followed on 20 December, as the Otago Daily Times reported.
The floating pontoon at Drummonds came into use in early February 2025, after a parts delay. It gives boats enough depth at low tide, which is why the commercial operators and the cruise-ship tenders moved there. Daly's Wharf took the diesel pump and a new crane from the Main Wharf, plus water and lighting.
Both are public. You can walk out on Drummonds to watch the boats come in, though on a cruise-ship morning it is a busy place.

Where do you park in Akaroa during the wharf works?
Use the free Gaiety Hall car park on Rue Jolie, up to 8 hours and campervans included.
Black Cat recommends the Gaiety Hall lot, about 3 minutes on foot from its office at 61 Beach Road. It is the simplest choice for any morning cruise. The southern end of the Recreation Ground, at the town entrance, is fenced off as the contractor's yard, so do not count on parking there.
Driving from Christchurch, plan on about 90 minutes over the Hilltop on SH75, then 10 minutes to park and walk. If you are cutting it fine for a 10:45 departure, skip the coffee stop until afterwards. Our day trip guide covers the drive and the shuttles.
What does the wharf rebuild mean for cruise-ship passengers?
Tenders land at Drummonds Jetty, about 180 m from the old wharf, right in the village. No shuttle is needed, and two cruise operators board from the same spot.
CruiseMapper's Akaroa port page notes that tenders use Drummonds Jetty during the rebuild, "about 180 m northeast of the Main Wharf". From there you are on Beach Road within a minute. Akaroa Dolphins boards from the same jetty, which makes it the simplest harbour cruise for a ship passenger.
Akaroa only expects a handful of ships in 2026-27. The dates, and what to book on a port day, are in our post on cruise-ship days in Akaroa.
