Akaroa dolphin swim season 2026-27

The wetsuits are back on the hooks. Here is when the Akaroa swim runs this summer, how cold the water really is, and what changed since last season.

Swimming with Hector's dolphins in Akaroa Harbour is a summer-only trip. The 2026-27 season opened on 1 October 2026 and runs to the end of April 2027. Only one company holds the permit to take swimmers out in the harbour: Black Cat Cruises. Every swim you can book, direct or through a Christchurch day tour, ends up on their boat.

A few things are different this year. Check-in has moved off the Main Wharf, the hot showers are gone for now, and the old part-refund deal that some resellers still advertise no longer exists. This post sets out the dates, the water temperatures and the rules as they stand at the end of October 2026.

The quick answer

The swim runs from 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027, with a maximum of 12 swimmers per trip. Black Cat charges NZ$250 per adult swimmer, NZ$220 for children 8-15 and NZ$180 for spectators. Check in at 61 Beach Road, not the Main Wharf. Water is about 12 C in October and 17 C in February. No dolphins sighted means a free re-cruise voucher, not a refund.

When does the 2026-27 dolphin swim season start and end?

It opened on 1 October 2026 and closes at the end of April 2027. There are no swims from May to September.

Black Cat Cruises runs the swim "1st October through to end of April" and nothing outside that window. The trip lasts about 3.5 hours, with a cap of 12 swimmers per boat. Ages 8 and up can get in the water: children aged 8 to 12 need an adult swimmer next to them, and 12 to 16-year-olds need an adult on board as a spectator.

The dolphins are here all year, but summer is when they come closest. Calves are born from about November to mid February, according to the Hector's dolphin research summarised on Wikipedia. That cuts both ways for swimmers. The Marine Mammals Protection Regulations 1992 forbid swimming with a pod that includes young calves, so a skipper in December can find dolphins and still keep you on deck.

How cold is the water in Akaroa Harbour for the swim?

Cold. Average sea temperature is about 11.7 C in October, rising to about 17 C in February, then falling to 14.5 C by April.

These are monthly averages for Akaroa from seatemperature.info. On 28 October 2026 the site logged 14.2 C, which is warm for the month. February is the warmest; October is the coldest month of the season by a clear margin.

Black Cat hands out premium 5 mm wetsuits and masks, and that suit is what makes October bearable. You float in deep water and do not touch the bottom. One more change worth planning for: the operator says there are no hot showers during the Main Wharf works, so they pipe hot water into your wetsuit after the swim instead. Bring a towel and warm layers for the ride back. Our swim guide has the full kit list.

What does the Akaroa dolphin swim cost in 2026?

Booked direct, NZ$250 per adult swimmer, NZ$220 per child aged 8 to 15, and NZ$180 for a spectator. The Viator day trip from Christchurch starts at $224 USD.

Those are Black Cat's own 2026 prices in New Zealand dollars. Children aged 2 to 5 can ride along free with an adult spectator. The swim includes the wetsuit, mask, hot chocolate and cookies, and the crew tries to get photos of you in the water.

From Christchurch, the easy option is the Leisure Tours swim day trip: hotel pickup at 8:30 am, about 9 hours door to door, the Black Cat swim, free time in Akaroa and a cheese stop at Barrys Bay. Lunch is extra. It needs a minimum of 4 adults to run, and the cancellation terms are tighter: full refund only 6 or more days before, 50% between 2 and 6 days.

If you have a car, book the swim direct and drive the 84 km over the Hilltop yourself. If you do not, the coach saves you a long day of shuttles. Our price guide puts every boat side by side.

What changed for the 2026-27 season?

Check-in moved to 61 Beach Road on 1 May 2026 because of the Main Wharf rebuild, hot showers are gone for now, and the old part-refund deal is history.

Black Cat's cruise page says it plainly: "From May 1st - Tour check-in will be at 61 Beach Road, Akaroa due to redevelopment of Main Wharf." Arrive at least 20 minutes before departure. At the desk you get a boarding pass and directions to the jetty in use that day. The wharf rebuild is expected to run to mid 2027, so this setup covers the whole season.

Parking: Black Cat points drivers to the free lot at the Gaiety Hall on Rue Jolie, up to 8 hours and campervans included, about 3 minutes on foot from the office.

The other change is old news that keeps resurfacing. Some resellers still promise a partial refund if the swim does not happen. Black Cat's current terms do not. Ignore any 25% or 50% figure you see quoted.

What happens if you see no dolphins or never get in the water?

No dolphins sighted: a free voucher for the Akaroa Nature Cruise. Dolphins seen but no swim: no refund. Bad weather: full refund or a new date.

Black Cat's wording is "Swims are not guaranteed." The dolphins are wild and endangered, and they decide whether to come close. If you see none at all, you get a complimentary re-cruise voucher. It is a voucher for the 2-hour nature cruise, not money back, and only useful if you can come back to Akaroa.

The harder case is when the skipper finds a pod but cannot put you in: calves present, dolphins feeding or resting, or the group moving fast. That counts as a trip, and you pay. Guests report this too. One reviewer in February 2025 saw plenty of dolphins but "only got in the water 1 time". Another, from the same month, liked that the crew "took good care not to chase or harass them. We got to swim with the dolphins when the dolphins signaled they wanted to play."

If the skipper calls the trip off for sea conditions, Black Cat offers a full refund or a transfer. Viator's swim listing promises a new date or a full refund in the same case.

When should you book a 2026-27 dolphin swim?

With only 12 places per trip, book December and January dates as soon as your plans are fixed, and other months one to two weeks ahead.

Twelve swimmers per boat sells out fast in the school holidays. Everything New Zealand calls December the peak and says the swim books out well in advance. We would book Christmas to late January the moment flights are confirmed. October and April are the easy months, if you can handle the water.

Leave a spare day if you can. A swim cancelled for weather on your only day in Akaroa means no swim at all, and the voucher system rewards people who stay two nights. If the swim is not for you or the kids are under 8, the two nature cruises run all year.
